Best of 2023 by Barking Dog Images

I can’t believe that 2023 is already coming to a close! This year is the first full year I have been doing photography as a full-time job, and I couldn’t have expected how amazing it would feel. From local and national dog sport events to self-publishing my first book, this is the best job anyone could dream of!

I am so thankful to my clients, friends, and family for your support of my small business! To wrap up the year, here are some of my favorite photos from 2023 (in no specific order).

Best sunset

I was lucky to travel in 2023 to photograph dogs and their handlers for my book Tails of Teamwork (www.tailsofteamwork.com). Near my hometown in Minnesota, I photographed Shantel’s amazing family of 6 Schnauzers and 2 horses! I was giddy with excitement when she showed me the set-up for her agility equipment; as the sun was setting behind the dog walk, we made magic! Here is Rainey in the glow of sunset.

Best destination

On another one of my trips for Tails of Teamwork, I was able to do my first beach shoot at the actual ocean (instead of Lake Michigan) in California! I am obsessed with this image of Shreddy Mercury, owned by mom Monica!

Best outfit

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s Mojo! Look at this super-dog fly – not only did he wear this super outfit, he also had a neck tie for his portraits!

Best blooper

Usually, I will create a composite image if a client wants multiple dogs running towards the camera, but sometimes with a smaller group we can try having them run together and hope for the best. That method resulted in this hilarious shot, which was one of my favorites from Grace’s session! I like to think that Rue is laughing at how she is smoking her siblings!

Best action

I photograph so much action between dog sport events and sport images during portrait sessions, so this was an incredibly hard choice. My favorite action shot of 2023 came down to Mergie the Chessie grabbing her bumper while diving off of the dock at a private swimming hole near me. Her intensity mixed with the lighting and the lake can not be beat!

Best puppy cuddles

I love photographs of owners and their dogs together, and even more so when a puppy is involved! Can you handle how cute Holly and baby Lumi are?

Best breed

I worked with so many cool purebred and mixed breed dogs in 2023, but I have a special affinity towards Borzois (and hope to own one someday). So it was a treat when Angela’s young Borzoi Tino signed up for my tulip field limited edition sessions!

Best trick

I absolutely love photographing dogs who are trained to perform in sports (I did write an entire book about it!) and Shania and River show off why! Look at the teamwork between these two playing disc on a dewey summer morning!

Best other species

This past year, I expanded my business to work with more cats and horses. However, some “other” species ended up in front of my camera as well, including guinea pigs and chickens!

That’s a wrap!

This post was incredibly hard to write, and I think that shows how many special animals and humans I got to photograph in 2023. I can’t wait to see what 2024 will bring! If you would like to work with me, please get in touch, my schedule fills up fast!
